"A Winter's Poem"
A Winter's Poem invokes images of an icy, crystalline landscape, the subtle motions and changes beneath a seemingly static surface. Like winter itself, it builds power glacially, from the glint of ice, flurries, and wind, to great expanses of white earth and sky. The work is subtitled Palindromes for the extensive use of palindromic and retrograde passages, in individual phrases, and in the larger structure of the work.
This piece was originally recorded in September 2004 by ERM Media for their anthology "Masterworks of the New Era Vol. 1" I have since revised the score.
This revised version of A Winter's Poem received its performance premiere on April 21st, 2007, in Lincoln, Nebraska, by the UNL Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Tyler White.
The MP3 of that performance is streaming to you now. fileadmin/fc/media/WintersPoem.mp3Here is a PDF of the score as it was played in Nebraska.
A Winter's Poem is within the technical capabilities of a good college or even high school orchestra. If you are interested in performing this piece, please feel free to contact me.
